Located on New Zealand's South Island, the Routeburn Track is a hiking trail that winds through the mountainous region of the Southern Alps. The journey, a three-day hike, begins in Queenstown and traverses the Routeburn River to the Routeburn Flats Hut, ideal for an overnight rest stop. The following two days take hikers across cliff tops of Lake Harris and through the Fiordland National Park, where several viewing points offer views across the landscape. The final leg of the Routeburn Track takes you past Earland Falls, a 174-meter waterfall, and up to Key Summit with a 360-degree view of the Fiordland National Park. The hike finishes in Queenstown after a total of 32 kilometers. As of 2010, the cost to participate in an unguided walk along the Routeburn Track was $350 U.S. per person. This price includes a pre-walk briefing, access to the overnight huts and bus transportation to the entrance of the Routeburn Track.
