When Was Alaska "Discovered"? Russian Explorers in the 1730s–1740s

European Discovery of Alaska: The Russian Expeditions

"Discovery" depends on perspective — Indigenous peoples (Unangan, Tlingit, Yup'ik, Dena'ina, etc.) inhabited Alaska for 10,000+ years. But for European record:

🇷🇺 Russian "Discovery" (1730s–1740s)

  • Vitus Bering (Danish-born, Russian Navy): Led two Kamchatka Expeditions.
  • First Expedition (1725–1730): Proved Asia–America separation (Bering Strait). Did not sight Alaska mainland.
  • Second Expedition (1733–1743) — Great Northern Expedition:
    • 1741: Bering (on St. Peter) and Chirikov (on St. Paul) sail from Petropavlovsk.
    • July 1741: Chirikov sights SE Alaska (Prince of Wales Island) — first confirmed European sighting.
    • July 1741: Bering sights Mt. St. Elias, lands Kayak Island — first confirmed landing.
    • Bering dies Dec 1741 on Bering Island (Commander Islands); crew winters, builds boat, returns 1742 with furs.
  • Result: Sea otter fur rush begins. Russian promyshlenniki (fur hunters) establish posts: Three Saints Bay (Kodiak, 1784), Sitka (1799). Russian-America Company chartered 1799.

🇬🇧 British & 🇪🇸 Spanish Follow

  • 1778: James Cook maps NW coast, trades for furs — confirms Russian presence.
  • 1774–1790s: Spanish expeditions (Pérez, Heceta, Quadra, Malaspina) from Mexico — claim sovereignty, name places (Bucareli, Valdez, Cordova).
  • 1792–1794: George Vancouver surveys comprehensively — names Vancouver, Puget Sound, etc.

🇺🇸 U.S. Acquisition

  • 1867: Alaska Purchase — $7.2M (2¢/acre). "Seward's Folly."
  • 1884: District of Alaska (civil govt).
  • 1912: Territory of Alaska.
  • 1959: 49th State (Jan 3).

📜 Indigenous Perspective

Unangan (Aleut) met Bering 1741. Their oral histories, archaeology, and continuous presence are the true "discovery." Russian arrival began catastrophic disruption: forced labor, disease, cultural suppression — 80% Unangan dead by 1800.

European "discovery": Bering/Chirikov 1741. Human presence: 10,000+ years earlier. The difference matters.
