Blackbeard’s North Carolina Connection: Ocracoke Inlet
The Pirate’s Final Anchorage
While Blackbeard (Edward Teach) operated along the entire Eastern Seaboard, his most famous North Carolina hideout was Ocracoke Inlet in the Outer Banks.
- Used the inlet’s shallow, shifting channels to evade larger Royal Navy ships.
- Established a base on Ocracoke Island (then sparsely settled).
- Killed in battle at Ocracoke Inlet by Lt. Robert Maynard (Nov 1718).
No evidence of other major NC hideouts. His broader range included the Bahamas, Carolina coast, and Chesapeake Bay.
