How to Visit the Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House is a gorgeous Victorian mansion in San Jose, California. It was built at the turn of the century by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune, who was convinced by a Boston psychic that the only way to appease the spirits of those killed by the Winchester rifle was to start construction on a house that would never be finished. The construction ended immediately upon Sarah's death in 1922, and today it is a historic landmark with many beautiful examples of Victorian architecture. Here's how to visit the Winchester Mystery House.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange a date to travel to the Winchester Mystery House. The house is open every day except Christmas, and offers midnight tours every Friday the 13th as well as on Halloween.

    • 2

Choose a tour. The midnight tours are rare and exciting. The regular tour will show you much of the house, while the behind-the-scenes tour will take you through some of Sarah Winchester's secret passages. When you're done with one or both of these, stroll through the gardens and the rifle museum at no additional charge.

    • 3

Buy tickets in advance, particularly for the flashlight tours, or show up early so that you have plenty of time to get settled in and perhaps explore the gift shop (see Resources below).

    • 4

Bring a camera and record some of the fun and eccentric features like the stairway into the ceiling and the window built into the floor.

    • 5

Be sure to follow the directions of your tour guide to help ensure that the mansion is preserved for the future.
