Where Rubies Are Usually Found

A majority of the world's rubies are mined in Asia, which includes Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand. With plentiful alluvial deposits and limestone, Myanmar, particularly the Mogok district, yields the largest sources of rubies in the world. Other places where significant ruby deposits have been discovered include Australia, India, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Montana and North Carolina.
  1. Myanmar

    • Myanmar, formally called Burma, has had the reputation for producing some of the world's largest natural rubies. Unfortunately, with the political and economic instability the country has faced, mining production has been on the decline since the early 1990s. The country is known for its dark blood colored rubies.

    Kenya

    • The red color represents fire and warmth.

Rubies are harvested along with pink sapphires in Bogoria and Baringo, provinces in Kenya. The famous Corby ruby mine is located here. This African nation is notorious for yielding violet to brownish red rubies.

    The United States

    • North Carolina and Montana produce lighter colored rubies and feature gem mining as a tourist attraction. The United States is also home to the 138.7-carat Rooser Reeves Star Ruby, housed in the Smithsonian Museum, along with the De Long Star Ruby, at 100 carats.
