Tours of Irish Castles

Ireland is a country of many castles, and these castles draw many people to visit this beautiful place. Plan a full day to visit each castle. Each one is different from the next and you will learn a little history of castles -- and Ireland -- along the way.
  1. Blarney Castle

    • This popular castle was built in 1446, and is one of Ireland's most sought-out attractions. Located in Blarney Village, Blarney Castle is just northwest of Cork City. The Blarney Stone, also known as the Stone of Eloquence, is located atop the castle's tower. It is believed that if you kiss the stone you will have eternal eloquence. During the castle tour you will hear stories of famous people including Queen Elizabeth and Oliver Cromwell. You can visit the castle any day except Christmas Eve and Christmas.

    Dublin Castle

    • Dublin Castle is located just south of the River Liffey. One of the most famous and historic castles in Ireland, this castle's history involves the British and the Vikings. Built upon the very first Viking fortress location, the castle became the chair of Ireland's British rule. The Dublin Castle features a courtyard, clock tower and the record tower, the biggest relic left of the historic Norman buildings constructed by King John in the early 1200s. The Church of Holy Trinity, designed by Francis Johnston in the early 1800s, is located on the Dublin Castle premises. View the stained glass windows, beautiful vault ceilings and carved oak panels, and have something to eat at the patisserie or bistro. Tours are offered daily except for Dec. 24 - 28, 31, Jan. 1 and Good Friday.

    King John's Castle

    • King John's Castle is located on the River Shannon at King's Island. Containing 800 years of Limerick City history, this 13th century Anglo Norman Castle was built in the early 1200s and has undergone extensive repairs over the centuries. It displays features that were unique during its time; a large gatehouse, corner towers and battlements. The visitor center features a historical exhibit recounting the castle's dramatic history. The luxurious courtyard informs visitors of the 16th century traditions and trades. You can view one of the siege mines in complete reconstruction which helps visitors better understand that time in history. Just outside the castle is a Michael Hogan, Bard of Thomond life-sized statue, one of Limerick's poets. One of his most popular poems is "Drunken Thady." Visitors are welcome daily except for Dec. 24 - 26.
