Pemberton Historical Park (pembertonpark.org) covers over 260 acres of land on the western edge of Salisbury and provides visitors the opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities. The construction of Pemberton Hall dates back to the early 1740s and this building now houses historical exhibitions about the Wicomico County area. Public tours take place on Sunday afternoons from May to September, and the facility also offers group tours by appointment at other times. The parkland around the hall has a 4.5 mile trail system and a nature trail guide provides details of interesting features for visitors to look out for while walking the routes.
Salisbury Zoo (salisburyzoo.org) has provided animal education and recreation for visitors since it opened in the 1950s. The various zones and enclosures around the zoo house a number of species, with some of those on view including alligator, jaguar, bison, bear and flamingo. Opening daily, the zoo offers free admission for visitors to tour the grounds and see the animals. It also offers guided educational tours for student and civic groups.
Annual events staged in Salisbury include the Pork in the Park National BBQ Cookoff (porkinthepark.org). The celebrations take place in Winterplace Park over a three-day period in April, with a variety of events staged. These include Kansas City Barbecue Society (kcbs.us) sponsored cooking competitions, live concerts featuring blues and country music, regional craft-making displays and vendors, and rides and amusements for kids. Pemberton Historical Park hosts the Autumn Wine Festival (autumnwinefestival.org) during October. This two-day festival offers the chance for visitors to taste some Maryland wines, as well as enjoy a variety of live music concerts.
The Delmarva Shorebirds Minor League Baseball team (minorleaguebaseball.com) offer the chance for baseball fans to enjoy the sport in Salisbury. An affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, the Shorebirds play their home games at the Arthur W Perdue Stadium. The team participates in 70 home games each year in the South Atlantic League, providing plenty of opportunities for visitors to take in a game. Special packages for fans include a Little League Package, where kids from a Little League team can take the field with the Shorebirds at the start of a regular game.
The Ward Museum of Wild Fowl Art (wardmuseum.org) lies on Schumaker Pond and offers the chance to see some of the natural bird life in the Salisbury area. Two nature trails offer the chance for visitors to walk around the pond and see a variety of local birds, including ducks, geese, and Great Blue herons. To add to the experience, the routes have signs pointing out interesting features. The museum also has exhibitions of wild fowl art and sculpture for visitors to view.
