Fun Activities for Teens in Lynden, Washington

Within spitting distance of the US/Canadian border sits the small town of Lynden, Washington. It was established during the gold rush of the 1800s and hints of its rich Dutch heritage are visible throughout the city today. While some hot spots for teens are more prominent in the nearby communities of Ferndale and Bellingham, for those who prefer to commune with nature or reconnect with history Lynden offers small town recreation within a community steeped in the pioneer spirit.
  1. Horseback Riding

    • Lynden offers several community parks through its Parks and Recreation department, one of which is Berthusen Park. What was once the homestead of Hans Berthusen, these 236 acres now connect modern residents and visitors of Lynden with its pioneer past. The barn and privy that once belonged to Berthusen himself are over a hundred years old, built right from trees on the farm, and are listed on the Register of Historic Places. In addition to a hiking/biking trail through old-growth cedars, teens may explore this rustic area on horseback.

    Indoor Skating

    • If the weather calls for a little indoor recreation, the Lynden Skateway provides ample opportunity for teens to have a little fun during colder, winter months. Whether your teen prefers regular skating, inline or speed skating, for less than $10 they can enjoy both the skate admission as well as rental skates during Open Skates, which are held on Wednesdays, Fridays and the weekend. Family discounts are available, as well as special holiday events and birthday parties.

    Museum Internships

    • Students from Canada and Washington are encouraged to participate in the programs available at the Lynden Pioneer Museum. If your teen is a history buff, an internship at the museum allows hands-on practical education through accredited school or college programs. For those teens who simply wish to visit, the past meets the present in the palm of their hand with the palmtop “Time Machine," a device that offers corresponding visual displays as students explore the museum.

    Sports and Recreation

    • Bender Park is another of Lynden's city park resources, one that provides teens a variety of sports activities from which to choose in a family recreational complex. Whether your teen enjoys baseball, softball, soccer or lacrosse, Bender Park provides the venue to play the sport of their choice. It also offers a fenced-in dog park, a Bocce ball court and concessions. Bender Park is home to the Jim Kaemingk Sr. Trail, a four-mile asphalt recreational trail that cuts between the ball parks with a fabulous mountain view.
