How to Tell Whether States Are Part of Arid America or Humid America

The world is divided into six zones that relate to aridity but can be roughly reduced into two: arid and humid. These zones convey how wet or dry a region is and are used by the United Nations to combat desertification. In America, several regions fall into the arid category while others fall into the classification of humid. There are a few different ways to figure out which states fall into which categories.

Check a humidity map. Several web pages, such as the one available at Nature.berkeley.edu, show North America and its regional humidity. Desert areas are likely to be part of arid America, while forests and areas along the coast are more likely to be part of humid America. Check your state on one of these maps.

    • 2

Obtain information on annual rainfall in your state from a website such as Currentresults.com. Less rainfall makes it more likely that you are living in arid America.

    • 3

Look at evapotranspiration numbers for your state. Websites such as Geochange.er.usgs.gov provide sufficient information. These measure the amount of water being released into the atmosphere. Higher levels for your state indicate that you are located in humid America.

Look at the location on a map. States in the eastern United States are more likely to be part of humid America, while states in the west are often part of arid America.
