Beaches in New Jeresy

The Jersey Shore has long provided residents of New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia with the opportunity for some beachside R&R. New Jersey's beaches range from quiet and sedate to activity-packed human zoos. Facilities abound at most beaches and pets are welcome in some areas. The state's beaches were ranked second in the country for water quality in 2010, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
  1. Cleanliness

    • According to New Jersey Online (nj.com), the beaches closed the fewest number of times due to pollution and high bacteria levels were those found in Cape May and Atlantic counties. These have fewer outfall pipes directing storm water to the ocean. New Jersey's dirtiest beach is Beachwood Beach West on the Toms River in Beachwood, which is listed as a "repeat offender" on the Natural Resources Defense Council list of beaches that exceed the daily maximum allowable level of bacteria in their water.

    Family-Friendly

    • The Wildwoods beach was voted the best beach for families by New Jersey's Top 10 Beaches (njtoptenbeaches.org) in 2011. Entrance to the beach, which is located in Cape May County, is free, and the beach is backed by a 1.8-mile boardwalk. According to New Jersey Monthly, Point Pleasant Beach is the best beach for family fun. Located in Ocean County, beachfront attractions include Jenkinson's Aquarium (jenkinsons.com), bike-rental centers and regular live entertainment.

    Quiet

    • The beaches at Stone Harbor in Cape May County are recommended by New Jersey Monthly for those seeking a slower pace. The beaches are relatively uncrowded but within walking distance of town. Bay Head has no public changing rooms, which may deter some people, as might the prohibition on bringing food and drink onto the beach. Sea Girt is a 1-mile stretch of beach backed by a boardwalk.

    Pet-Friendly

    • Island Beach State Park in Ocean County is New Jersey's largest reserve of undeveloped barrier island. Dogs are permitted in designated areas of the park's sandy beaches, provided they are kept on a leash. According to the Dog Friendly website (dogfriendly.com), dogs are allowed on the beaches at Cape May Point and Stone Harbor in Cape May, Barnegat Light on the Central Shore, and Manasquan on the North Shore.
