Beaches in Sandy Hook, New Jersey

Sandy Hook, New Jersey, boasts seven miles of beaches along with one of the top migratory bird habitats on the Eastern Seaboard. Only 40 minutes from Manhattan on the local ferry, it is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and run by the National Park Service. Open all year except major holidays, the beaches attract large numbers of visitors in the summer and late arrivals may find the gates closed due to crowds.

  1. Ocean Beaches

    • The ocean side of Sandy Hook has five beaches, with lifeguards on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Memorial Day until Labor Day. For fishermen, surf fishing is permitted on beaches when lifeguards are off-duty. Because of its importance for shorebird nesting, some beaches are closed to the public during spring and summer. Motorized boats may not land on the beach, although car top boats without motors may launch from Horseshoe Cove and the area known as Beach C. For picnicking, eat on the beach or go to the observation deck on North Beach and take in the view of New York Harbor.

    Bay Beaches

    • Across from the ocean beaches are the two beaches of Sandy Hook Bay. Both of them are popular with kite-surfers and wind-boarders. Hikers and bikers can make use of the multi-use pathway at Sandy Hook, and bike rentals are available for those who can't bring their own. Birding enthusiasts may see finds to add to their life lists at Spermaceti and Horseshoe Coves and can visit the New Jersey Audubon Society's Sandy Hook Bird Observatory. According to the National Park Service website, more than 350 species of bird and more than 50 types of butterflies have been seen on the Sandy Hook barrier island.

    Gunnison Beach

    • Some modern swimsuits leave little to the imagination. For those who prefer to forego bathing suits altogether, a visit to Gunnison Beach is in order. According to Friends of Gunnison Beach, approximately 5,000 people flock to the clothing-optional beach on summer weekends. The beach is also open during the week, with smaller crowds. Along with swimming and sunbathing, volleyball is a popular activity at Gunnison Beach. Nudity is not permitted in showers and bathrooms. Surfboards, rafts and flotation devices are not allowed. Arrive early any day of the week to ensure a good spot, but especially on weekends.
