One of the most popular activities to do on the Michigan sand dunes is off-roading on the large mounds of sand. People can bring their own All Terrain Vehicles, Jeeps or dune buggies. In addition, rental locations are at both sand dunes to rent these vehicles on-site. Another benefit to off-roading the dunes is the view --- both Sleeping Bear and Silver Lake dunes have beautiful views of local lakes.
Another fun activity that visitors to the Michigan sand dunes can enjoy is camping. Many local campsites are near the sand dunes, allowing easy access to the fun and activities of the dunes. Campers at Silver Lake Sand Dunes can stay at either Silver Lake RV Resort or Vacation Station RV Park. At Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, there are two campsites to choose from: Platte River Campground and D.H. Day Campground. In addition, several group campground areas are at Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes.
For those who love adventure but aren't ready to go off-roading, spend your days climbing the Michigan sand dunes. At Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, the climb is described as an event for the whole family. Along the dunes are restrooms and vending machines, and the best reward for the climb is the view of Glen Lake from the top of the dune. At Silver Lake Sand Dunes, visitors can sand-surf across the dunes as well as pack a picnic lunch for their adventure.
In addition to visiting the dunes, a variety of other fun things are available in the surrounding areas. Both dunes are near lakes, so visitors can take a break from the dunes to go jet-skiing, swimming or fishing nearby. At Silver Lake Sand Dunes, visitors can hike over to Little Point Sable's historic lighthouse. Also nearby the dunes are quaint towns. At Silver Lake Sand Dunes, visitors can see the town of Silver Lake; at Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, visitors can check out the tiny town of Glen Haven.
