Activities in Sodus Point, New York

Sodus Point, New York, sits on the shores of Sodus Bay, a large water inlet of Lake Ontario. The city's history dates back to the building of Sodus Bay Lighthouse in the 19th century. Since then, Sodus Point evolved into a resort town with boating marinas, a golf course and seafood dining. Most tourists come to Sodus Point during the summer, when the "lake affect" -- the local term for cold weather produced by winds from Lake Ontario -- is milder than in the winter.
  1. Boating

    • Sodus Bay is one of Lake Ontario's largest natural bays. Boating activities are available on the bay via the Sodus Bay Yacht Club (sodusbayyc.org) and Arney's Marina (arneysmarina.com), both located in Sodus Point. The Yacht Club facilities offer smaller boats, such as lightnings and outboards. Guest boat owners may also dock at the Yacht Club, located in downtown Sodus Point. Arney's Marina is in southern Sodus Point and provides 110 boating slips for boats up to 32-feet long. This family-owned and operated marina also sells power boats and fishing boats.

    Golf

    • Only one golf course is in Sodus Point, the Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club (sodusbayheights.com). This golf club opened in 1924 and provides an 18-hole course. The fifth hole is the club's signature hole; this fairway features a waterway in the middle of the fairway. Sodus Bay Heights provides challenges on its course, such as rolling hills and constant winds from Lake Ontario. Throughout the year, the club hosts golf tournaments from groups in the Syracuse and Rochester areas. Sodus Bay Heights has a pro shop with golf apparel and equipment. Upon request, the club offers golf lessons to adults and children.

    Museum Tours

    • The Sodus Bay Lighthouse (soduspointlighthouse.org) is on the shores of Lake Ontario. This lighthouse was built in 1871 and features the lighthouse and quarters for the lighthouse keepers. In the present day, Sodus Bay Lighthouse serves as a museum available for the public to tour from May through October. Exhibits include an authentic lighthouse fresnel light, sailor uniform, iron fireplace and late 19th century photographs.

Located in Sodus -- approximately 15 minutes from Sodus Point -- tourists may also visit the Sunshine Radio Museum (sunshineradiomuseum.org). This institute opened in 1926 as a radio store. The museum has various radio models from the early to mid-20th century for visitors to see.

    Seafood Dining

    • Sodus Point's waterfront location on Lake Ontario and Sodus Bay allows several of its restaurants to serve fresh seafood throughout the year. Two of these restaurants, Abe's Waterfront Boat House Bar & Grill (abeswaterfront.com) and Captain Jack's Good Time Tavern (captainjackstavern.com), are on the Sodus Point peninsula and provide views of Sodus Bay from their outdoor patios. During the summer, both of these restaurants provide live music on their patio areas. Seafood items at these restaurants include fried haddock, shrimp, lobster tails and scallops.

Waypoint Fine Food and Spirits (waypointfinefood.com) is on the eastern shore of Sodus Bay. This restaurant has outdoor dining and serves Alaskan king crab legs and clams Athena with red peppers and Greek olives.
