For a classic fall experience in Chautauqua, hop in the car and take a drive along Route 394. From mid-September through October, the changing leaves create a vivid burst of yellow, gold, red and orange. A drive along the route takes drivers past the 17-mile-long Chautauqua Lake, several wineries and on to Lake Erie.
In November wine lovers unite in Chautauqua for the Official Organization of the Chautauqua-Lake Erie-Wine Trail during the Harvest Wine Weekends. The area, the largest grape growing region East of the Rockies, produces white wines, European style wines, French American wines and more. The wine trail encompasses over 30,000 acres. Sip wine in 23 wineries, such as Mazza Vineyards, Blueberry Sky Farm Wineries and Noble Winery, and take the trail through small villages and local shops.
The Chautauqua Lake Erie Art Trail Open Studio Tour takes place yearly in November and is sponsored by the North Shore Arts Alliance. This free event allows guests to visit area studios and meet artists who live in the Chautauqua area. View paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics and more. The tour's trail takes place amongst forest hills, Lake Erie and vineyards, which provide inspiration for many artists.
Sounds of music fill the Chautauqua air in October due to the New Horizons Music Camp. Originally created for senior adults, younger generations can also join in. Adult bands, orchestra and jazz bands are formed by those with varying degrees of musical abilities. Even those with no experience playing an instrument are encouraged to join. The groups share music to the other campers by staging performances. Not only does New Horizons delve into instruments, but it also provide valuable companionship and gives seniors an outlet to make new connections.
