Community Activities in Irondequoit, New York

Bordered on three sides by bodies of water -- Lake Ontario, the Genesee River and the Irondequoit Bay -- is the city of Irondequoit, New York. The word "Irondequoit" aptly stands for "where the land and waters meet." There are approximately 52,000 residents of the city, according to the Town of Irondequoit. There is a 1,000 acre park called Durand-Eastman Park. Irondequoit has many activities and events available to everyone, old and young.
  1. Farmers' Market

    • Volunteering to greet visitors and helping with the opening and closing of the market are two of the possible activities available at the Irondequoit Farmers' Market. As of the time of this publication, you must be at least 18 years of age, enjoy working with people and be able to be on your feet for up to four hours to volunteer. The market is open from June until October at the Town Hall Complex. There is also entertainment available during scheduled times at the Performing Arts Gazebo such as comedy, juggling and a Broadway revue.

    City Events

    • Irondequoit's Fourth of July celebration and Oktoberfest are major citywide events. The July 4th Festival takes place at the Town Hall Complex. It is a two-day event the ends with an evening fireworks display on July 4th. The festival also includes arts and craft shows, a street dance, 10K and 2-mile runs, a parade and kid's entertainment. Another notable festival is Oktoberfest. It is held in Camp Eastman for two weekends in September. The festival features music, food and childrens' activities.

    The Department of Parks and Recreation

    • The Irondequoit Parks and Recreation Department offers many classes and programs for people of all ages. It not only maintains and operates the town's parks, but also the community center, the senior center, recreation programs, senior nutrition programs and the youth outreach program. The Irondequoit Community Center is located at 154 Pinegrove Avenue. It is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. The parks and recreation department has seasonal brochures available that explain all of their classes and programs.

    • Volunteering is an activity that not only benefits you but the organization and people you are helping. There are organizations in the area that will match your schedule and talents to a non-profit organization or charity that best fits your needs. Some possible volunteer activity areas include mentoring, gardening, landscaping and yard work.
