How to Draw the Louisiana State Flag & Seal

Drawing your state flag is one way to learn about the history of where you live. Louisiana's flag was adopted in July 1, 1912. It features the state seal, a Eastern Brown Pelican taking a bit of flesh from its own breast to feed a nest of three young pelicans. Below it are the words, "Union, Justice and Confidence." The pelican is a key symbol of Louisiana, which is known as the "Pelican State."

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a large rectangle. Make it big enough to fit the state seal on the interior.

    • 2

Look at a picture of Lousiana's flag. Draw the nest, which is shaped like a large plate. Use a pencil to create the texture of the twigs. Color it in brown.

    • 3

Draw the three baby pelicans in the nest. Draw their heads so they are reaching up for their mother. Leave the bodies of the babies white, but color their beaks yellow.

    • 4

Draw the mother pelican looming over the babies. Use a pencil to create the texture of her wing's feathers. Draw the wings outstretched. Color the beak, which is pointed to her young, in yellow.

    • 5

Beneath the nest draw a ribbon in the shape of a smile. Make it wide enough so you can include some text.

    • 6

Write the words "Union, Justice and Confidence" in upper case letters in the ribbon. Use a dark blue pencil for the letters.

    • 7

Color the background of the flag with the same blue colored pencil.
