How to Get to the Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is the tallest building in New York City -- and for 40 years after its completion in 1931 -- it was the tallest building in the world. Named one of the Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers, the skyscraper stands at 1250 feet. As a result, visitors from all across America and overseas come and marvel at this incredible feat of human engineering. Yet despite it's size, finding the Empire State Building, still requires directions.

      Travel to New York. The method of doing this will depend on where your journey begins. By checking online or at a local travel agency, arrangements can be made to book tickets for a plane, train or bus journey to The Big Apple. The method you choose should be the one most suitable and affordable to you.

      Decide on your ground transportation. Which method of transport will you use to travel through New York City, once you arrive? There are regular buses, trains or taxis -- as well as the famous New York City Subway. Car rental is an option that affords you some freedom and independance, but parking in Manhattan can be an expensive nightmare. It's a big city with plenty of options.

      Take the service 1, 2, or 3 on the subway from Seventh Avenue or else services A, C or E from Eighth Avenue Subway to Penn Station on 34th Street.

      For those who prefer to travel by train, Long Island Railroad, New Jersey Transit and Amtrak all have services that stop at Penn Station. Visitors coming from Connecticut should get the Metro North to Grand Central Station.

      Those driving by car should take any route into Manhattan and then follow signposts to get to 34th Street.

      Travel to Fifth Avenue and you will find the Empire State Building at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. It's hard to miss once you get that close!
