Places to Live in Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta has been the state capital of Georgia since 1868, and with a population of 5.4 million people in its total metropolitan area (as of 2009), it is the fifth-largest city in the United States. Many corporations call Atlanta their home, such as Coca-Cola, Turner Broadcasting and Delta Airlines. The city offers a wide variety of professional sports teams (MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL) and world-class entertainment (the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Fox Theatre).
  1. Downtown

    • Amongst the skyscrapers housing any number of Fortune 500 companies, downtown Atlanta offers many living options ready for purchase or rent, such as those at Allen Plaza. Living downtown will give residents easy access to the golden-domed Georgia State Capitol building, Turner Field and the Georgia Dome. High-class restaurants, department stores and other attractions pepper the streets for local residents.

    Midtown

    • Midtown Atlanta is geared toward those residents looking for convenient entertainment options on a nightly basis. This neighborhood stretches north from downtown toward Buckhead. The social center of Midtown is Piedmont Park, a 189-acre park featuring lakes, green areas and sports fields. Midtown presents itself as a great cross-section of Atlanta's diversity in one area of town. In Midtown, residents will find a large section of the city's gay community, chic nightspots for younger folk, a wide variety of renowned theaters (such as the Fox Theatre) and museums. Midtown has living options for nearly anyone in every price range.

    East Atlanta

    • Atlanta's local weekly events newspaper, "Creative Loafing," conducts a yearly poll of the best neighborhoods. Readers in 2011 voted East Atlanta as the "Best Overall Neighborhood." This lower-end neighborhood has been making great strides in improving the overall atmosphere of the area, and even though crime is still an issue, housing values are steadily increasing as safety improves. East Atlanta's business district, known as "The Village," has become a destination for locals and one of the reasons this neighborhood is on the rise.

    Buckhead

    • Buckhead is one of the ritziest neighborhoods in Atlanta. With a median home price of $467,763 as stated in Atlanta's "Creative Loafing" newspaper, expect to see mansions, high-rise condos and luxury apartments. The Georgia Governor's Mansion can be found in Buckhead. Located just north of Midtown, Buckhead is the destination for nightlife, high-end shopping and star-watching. The beautiful tree-lined streets make a great backdrop for expensive restaurants and houses alike.

    Little Five Points

    • Just east of Midtown Atlanta sits a small eclectic neighborhood called Little Five Points, or "L5P" to locals. The area earned its name from a point where five main Atlanta commuter train lines converge. Little Five Points offers a collage of vintage stores and events (such as the L5P Halloween Parade) found within a high-priced neighborhood. This is a popular destination for those who enjoy taking in a great band and indulging in alternative cultures.
