Oquage Creek State Park (nysparks.com/parks/27/details.aspx) is a state park located along the border of Delaware County and Chenango County. This state park offers several things to do as far as outdoor recreation. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy the 55-acre lake, which provides a shoreline beach for swimming and fishing. Bring your own lunch and enjoy a picnic with the family. The park also has over six miles of hiking trails, where visitors report sightings of deer, weasels, wild grapes, wild strawberries and various birds. Oquage Creek State Park is free to enter between 6 p.m. to 10 a.m., from June 6 to September 6. Entry is free anytime from September 7 to June 5.
Sidney Historical Museum (sidneyonline.com/sha.htm) is located in Sidney in the northwest region of Delaware County. This museum offers a collection of historical artifacts and memorabilia. Visitors are welcome to search old obituaries and conduct genealogy searches as well. The museum contains microfilm records that date by to 1882, old yearbooks, history books, arrowhead artifacts, military uniforms and vintage postcards and posters. Scheduled events include audio-visual presentations that highlight the history of New York.
Science Discovery Center (oneonta.edu/academics/sdc/index.html) is a science museum located in the northern region of Delaware County in Onenonta. Since its opening in 1999, the museum has featured several different scientific experiments for kids and parents to view. Visitors are welcome to partake in the hands-on environment fostered by the Science Discovery Center. Most of the experiments focus on physics and molecular biology. The Science Discover Center is free to the public and open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Saturday.
Outdoor hiking and camping is a huge attraction for residents of Delaware County. This area of the state has hundreds of miles of hiking trails that wind through the Catskill Mountains. The Catskill Scenic Trail (catskillscenictrail.org/index.html) is a 19-mile packed trail, which makes it perfect for hiking, biking and horseback riding. In the winter, the trail is also used for cross-country skiing. Pack your backpack and enjoy the day trekking through the beautiful Catskill Mountains.
