In 1797, due to an increased population in the region, the New York State Legislature officially established Delaware County. Located in the rolling hills of the Catskills Mountains, surrounded with forests, fields and streams, Delaware County has several towns and villages with notable landmarks and attractions such as Plattekill Mountain, the Delaware and Ulster Railroad and the Walton Theatre.
  1. Plattekill Mountain

    • Plattekill Mountain, located in the center of the Western Catskills Mountain in Delaware County, features snow-tubing, snowboarding and skiing. Open December through March, this mountainous terrain has 35 ski trails and three lifts and something for the entire family. Plattekill is owned and operated by a husband-and-wife team and offers group rates, lodging and lessons for beginners. The mountain elevation is 3,500 feet. One trail offers 1,100 feet of continuous vertical from top to bottom, and the longest trail measures 2 miles.

    Delaware and Ulster Railroad

    • Chartered in 1872, the Delaware and Ulster Railroad offers a scenic ride through New York's legendary Catskill Mountains. A tour takes you through two counties and seven towns; you will witness majestic mountains, rolling fields, farms and villages as well as the East Branch of the Delaware River. View an exhibit at the Arkville Depot and Rail Yard for information on the important role the railroad played in the development of this region. You can also visit the gift shop for souvenirs and memorabilia of the railroad trail.

    Walton Theatre

    • A crowd of about 1,500 attended the 1914 grand opening of what is known today as the Walton Theatre. With standing room only, opening night was such a hit that a special train from Delhi accommodated theater guests. Today, this theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it features movies, professional and amateur live entertainment as well as municipal, business and art events.
