Free Attractions in New York City

As the largest metropolis in the United States, New York City has something for everyone, even the budget-conscious tourists and resident. In addition to the many world-renowned institutions that have only a suggested admission fee, the Big Apple also offers attractions that are completely free of charge.
  1. Sony Wonder Technology Lab

    • Sony Wonder Technology Lab free for visitors. It is fully funded by the Sony Corporation of America and consists of four floors of interactive multimedia exhibits that allow visitors to explore a variety of communication and information technologies, such as robotics, animation and movie making. The Sony Wonder Technology Lab also screens films in a high definition theater that seats 73 people. The lab is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Reservations can be made up to three months in advanced and are highly recommended to ensure entry.

    General Grant National Memorial

    • The General Grant National Memorial is often referred to as Grant's Tomb and is the largest mausoleum in North America and the second largest in the Western Hemisphere. It houses the remains of former United States president and Union Army general Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia Dent Grant. In addition to the two burial sites, the 150-foot neoclassical granite and marble monument also contains several small exhibits that illustrate Grant's career and achievements. The memorial is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Free guided tours are available Monday through Sunday every hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    National Museum of the American Indian: George Gustav Heye Center

    • The George Gustave Heye Center is one of three branches of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and the only one located in New York City. The museum displays changing exhibits that highlight different aspects of the indigenous cultures that inhabited what is now the United States. The museum is housed in the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House, a Beaux-Arts style building in lower Manhattan that is over 100 years old. The building is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Admission is free.
