Free Activities in Western New York

Western New York is the home of the Niagara Falls and its surrounding parks, summer festivals, summer concerts and nature trails. There are many different free activities to do and free events to enjoy in Western New York. The area of Western New York covers from Buffalo, New York, up to Niagara Falls, New York in the north, down to Jamestown, New York in the south and out to Rochester, New York in the west. The area is known for its winters, but even in the face of snow and wind the people of Western New York find many different free ways to spend their time.

  1. Canal Concert Series

    • The Canal Concert Series is a series of summer concerts that feature national acts such as the Charlie Daniels Band and Queensryche. The events are held at the Ulrich City Center on Friday nights in Lockport, New York and then on Sweeney Street in North Tonawanda, New York on Saturday nights. Vendors at the events sell food, beverages and band merchandise.

    Thursday at The Square

    • Thursday at the Square is a series of concerts held during the summer at Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo, New York. The shows feature national touring acts including Pat Benatar and Eddie Money. Vendors offer food, beverages and band merchandise.

    Devil's Hole

    • The Devil's Hole is a hiking park in the Niagara Falls, New York area. The park leads down into the Niagara Gorge. It is referred to as the Devil's Hole because it is a series of stone steps that lead down to the bottom of the gorge 300 feet down. For more information phone 716-284-5778.

    Niagara Falls State Park

    • Niagara Falls State Park is where visitors can see the Falls themselves. The park has gift shops, a visitors center, paved walking paths, grassy areas with park benches, a visitors train that goes through the entire park and a two-story greenhouse with plants from all over the world. Visitors can get a close-up view of the Niagara Falls from either Prospect Point or Terrapin Point. Goat Island is also part of the park and it has picnic tables with a close up view of the Niagara River and the Falls. The visitors center can be reached at 716-278-1796.
