Activities in Central Florida

The central region of Florida features urban attractions in the greater Orlando area and outdoor recreation in the state's Chain of Lakes region. Fishing and boating activities are available for RV campers at large freshwater lakes, including Lake Apopka and Lake Kissimmee. Resort tourists have access to mega-theme parks in Orlando, the largest city in Central Florida. This area of the state is also less than an hour from beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

  1. Resorts

    • One of the largest resorts in the world is the Walt Disney World Resort (disneyworld.disney.go.com), located in the southwestern corner of greater Orlando. Within its four different theme parks -- Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot Center -- Disney World provides roller coasters, animal exhibits and restaurants. The resort also provides on-site lodging options.

      Marine wildlife lovers can see marine animal exhibits and shows at Sea World (seaworld.com). This resort is in south Orlando. Exhibits include the Beluga Interaction Program, Sharks Deep Dive and Believe, featuring Shamu, Sea World's killer whale. Sea World's water park, Aquatica, has the Cutback Cove wave pool and Dolphin Plunge inner tube slide.

    Themed Dining

    • Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville (margaritavilleorlando.com) is in the heart of the Universal Studios Resort in west Orlando. This restaurant provides a tropical theme of palm trees in the dining room, a tiki bar and outdoor patio, named the "Porch of Indecision." Jimmy Buffet songs are usually playing in the background. Seafood entrees include teriyaki chicken, calypso mahi mahi and crab cakes.

      Kissimmee's Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament (medievaltimes.com) allows restaurant patrons to become spectators of medieval-themed games and entertainment. All patrons sit in an arena setting and watch entertainment such as jousts, jester comedy and staged sword fights. Medieval Times is available for birthday parties and corporate events.

    RV Camping

    • Downtown Orlando is 20 minutes from the Winter Garden Campground Resort (wintergardenrv.com). This campground is also less than five minutes from boating docks at Lake Apopka and Johns Lake. Campground amenities include two outdoor pools, a private fishing pond and two laundromats. Winter Garden has 374 RV campsites with hook-ups for water, electricity and sewage. Pets may stay at Winter Garden.

      Situated in Clermont, Bee's RV Resort (beesrvresort.com) provides 214 RV campsites, and most have hook-ups for water, electricity, cable television and sewage. The resort also features a solar-heated pool and on-site restaurant, Honeypot Eatery, which serves Southern-style cuisine. Lake Apopka is a 15-minute drive from the resort and offers fishing facilities.

    Shopping

    • Open since 2001, the Mall at Millenia (mallatmillenia.com) is an upscale indoor mall just off International Drive in Orlando. This mall features stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's, the Apple Store and Macy's. Mall at Millenia is also adjacent to the Swedish furniture company, IKEA. Valet parking and taxi service is available in the mall's parking lot. The mall offers currency exchange service.

      Altamonte Mall (altamontemall.com) in Altamonte Springs is a super-regional mall in the northern region of Central Florida. The marquee tenants of this mall are the Apple Store, Macy's and Sears. An 18-screen movie theater is on Altamonte Mall's property. This mall was built in 1974, but went through a renovation in the late 1980s.
