Residential Schools for the Mentally Challenged in Pennsylvania

A myriad of challenges arise from mental disabilities such as behavioral disorders, mental retardation and other neuropathies. For mentally challenged students in Pennsylvania, different residential options are available.

  1. Camphill Special School

    • The primary goal of the Camphill Special School in Glenmoore is to create a sense of wholeness in children and youth who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is accomplished through a combination of education and therapy. The daily structure includes attending school, performing household chores, music lessons and playtime. Older students at Camphill have other activities available to them such as excursions, cookouts and dances.

    The Phelps School

    • In Malvern, the Phelps School offers modified educational programs dependent upon the capacity and ability of each student. The student body is comprised of students who have difficulties with organization, time management and decision-making skills. This all-boys school has small class sizes, a structured and disciplined atmosphere, as well as daily tutorial support. Seven different residence halls are available, one comes complete with two house dogs.

    Schools for the Deaf

    • Two schools in Pennsylvania offer its deaf and hearing-impaired students on-campus residency. The Scranton School has classes for kindergarten through 12th grades, including preschool. Students arrive on Monday and return home Friday afternoon, spending weekends at home.

    Overnight Camps

    • Camp Lee Mar is held in the eastern Pennsylvanian town of Lackawaxen. Billed as a special camp for special kids, Camp Lee Mar offers a residential seven-week co-ed camp program.

Summit Summer and Travel Camp is for children with Asperger's syndrome, attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other learning disabilities. This particular camp offers eight different types of experiences at its site in Honesdale.
