El Dorado, California, Attractions

El Dorado, California, is known as gold country. It's where the Gold Rush originated and today El Dorado County is rich in history from old mining towns to pioneer cemeteries and museums where visitors can see relics and artifacts from a bygone era. The area is also known for its wineries and the natural beauty of the untamed wilderness. Tourism is a major part of the economy, and there are plenty of attractions to enjoy.

  1. Lake Tahoe

    • Lake Tahoe is the area's main attraction. Washoe Indians discovered this national treasure centuries ago. While it has been developed as a vacation haven with ski resorts, casinos and hotels that draw millions of visitors a year, the beauty and restful silence continue to be among Lake Tahoe's most loved attributes.

    The Wineries of Fair Play

    • One of the best-kept secrets of the area are the 20 family-owned wineries that are tucked in the Sierra foothills. You can tour the wineries individually or time your visit to attend the annual Fair Play Festival. Each year the wineries coordinate dates and times to invite the public to an open house celebration. Through the years, the festival has grown and thousands of fans gather the first weekend in June for the wine-tasting experience.

    Coloma Valley

    • Gold country lies in the Sierra foothills as well. The history of the nation was changed when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1849. The California Gold Rush was on and the population swelled. Today the discovery site and several historic buildings belong to California's State Park system. At the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, visitors can learn how to pan for gold or just walk along the river and enjoy the wildlife.

    Farm Trails and Apple Hill

    • El Dorado has a proud heritage in agriculture that began during the Gold Rush era. The area is abundant with crops like cherries, berries, peaches, apples, pears and oranges. Christmas trees are also a popular crop. Apple Hill Ranch is made up of more than 50 ranches, and the owners invite the public to enjoy a day on the lush land for a picnic. There is also a micro brewery, wineries and a spa. Annual activities include a Haunted Nature Trail, Christmas celebrations and the observance of Johnny Appleseed Day.
