Cleveland, Georgia Attractions

Cleveland, often called the Gateway to the North Georgia Mountains, is the commercial center of White County, Georgia. Though its population is less than 3,000, it services small villages and unincorporated areas within a 1,200-square-mile area. Cleveland is popular with campers and nature-lovers and offers an interesting range of attractions.

  1. Babyland General Hospital

    • Visit the birthplace of the Cabbage Patch Kids, Babyland General Hospital. The dolls, which rose to the height of their popularity in the mid-1980s, continue to be available for "adoption," either online or at the hospital. Situated on 650 acres, the hospital features a display of classic dolls and offers a tour of the facility, including the "newborn nursery," schoolroom, tree house, gift shop and, of course, the cabbage patch. "Adoption hours" are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on major holidays.

    Gold n Gem Grubbin

    • If you've dreamed of panning for gold or gemstones, pay a visit to Gold n Gem Grubbin, North Georgia's only commercially functional gold mine. Visitors can pan in the sluices or right in the creek, then take their finds into the shop for evaluation, cutting and mounting. Guests can stay on-site at the tent and RV campgrounds. Parking and admission are free, though panning and camping are fee-based. Gold n Gem Grubbin operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week, except on major holidays.

    White County Historical Museum

    • The White County Historical Museum, home to the White County Historical Society, offers visitors a chance to view White County history displays, including several Civil War displays. The museum includes the historic courthouse, built between 1859 and 1860, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
