Greene County in eastern North Carolina contains nine townships and has a population estimated at 20,157 by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2009. The county is home to nine public and private schools from pre-kindergarten to high school. One institution also offers college courses to high-school students.
Greene County is home to two public primary-level schools: West Greene Elementary School and Snow Hill Primary School. Both are in the town of Snow Hill and fall under the jurisdiction of the Greene County school system. West Greene Elementary School enrolls 766 students between the third and fifth grades. Snow Hill Primary School enrolls 839 students from kindergarten to second grade. Snow Hill won the Super Safe School award for the years 2006 through 2009 and also the 2007-2008 North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Lighthouse Award. Both are Title I schools, enabling them to receive federal funding because of the number of low-income students they enroll.
Greene County has one public middle school, also in the Greene County school system. Like the two primary schools, Greene County Middle School is located in Snow Hill, where it enrolls 776 students between the sixth and eighth grades. Greene County Middle School is also a Title I school.
Greene County has only one public secondary school, Greene Central High School in Show Hill, which is also part of the Greene County school system. With 878 students, this is the largest school in the area. It is a Title I school.
Greene County is home to two private educational institutions: Covenant of Faith Christian Academy and Mt. Calvary Christian Academy, both in the town of Hookerton. Covenant of Faith Christian Academy has eight students and two teachers as of 2011; the coeducational school services students from kindergarten to the sixth grade. Its mascot is the eagle. Mt. Calvary Christian Academy has 172 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The school is associated with the Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church. The school's mascot is the warrior; in 2010 the school won state championships in both baseball and softball.
Other schools in Greene County include a Pre-K Center, the Project Rescue Alternative Learning Center and the Greene Early College High School, all in Snow Hill. The Greene Early College High School allows students to move from the eighth grade directly into college work, while also teaching them the skills learned in most high schools. Because of the uniqueness of this program, students must go through an application process. The school exists as a partnership between the Greene County school system and Lenoir Community college in nearby Lenoir County, North Carolina.
