Wise County is situated in southwestern Virginia, near the Virginia border with Kentucky. The Wise County School Division administers the public school system in Wise County. As of January 2011, over 7,000 students are enrolled in the public school system in Wise County. The school system has schools that serve students from kindergarten through grade 12.
Appalachia Elementary School is located at 3965 Kent Junction Road in Appalachia, Virginia. The school educates students from pre-kindergarten through the seventh grade. It opened its doors for enrollment in 1976. The school has an active parent teacher organization, which is a consortium of family members of students and teachers that works to support an active and flourishing education environment. Appalachia Elementary School is the home of the Bulldogs where students can participate in basketball, volleyball, football and cheerleading.
Pound High School is in Pound, Virginia. It is located at 11531 Wildcat Drive. The school is only seven miles from Kentucky. Pound High School offers classes in many areas, including music, business, drama, driver's education, English, foreign language, social studies, mathematics, physical education and science. It also offers special education classes and classes for gifted students. Students at Pound High School have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports teams, including basketball, golf, tennis and wrestling. Pound High School's mascot is the Wildcat and its colors are scarlet, black and white.
Powell Valley Primary School is at 2945 2nd Avenue, E in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. The school provides education to students in grades pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. The school has a cafeteria that serves lunch and breakfast to students and visitors. The Powell Valley Primary School parent teacher association organizes many events for students, including a teacher celebration week and a Spring Fling event.
Coeburn Middle School is the home of the Blue Knights. The school serves middle school students in grades five through eight. It is located at 518 Centre Avenue in Coeburn, Virginia. As of January 2011, the population of Coeburn was approximately 2,165 people with over 900 families. The school encourages the use of technology among its students and staff and provides a listing of student assignments and activities on its website.
The James Woodrow Adams Combined School is situated in Pound, Virginia at 10824 Orby Cantrell Highway. The school is both an elementary and a middle school serving the people of Wise County. It enrolls and educates students from pre-kindergarten through grade eight.
