Bulawayo is Zimbabwe's second largest city; the capital is the first largest. Although Zimbabwe is known for its civil unrest and high unemployment rate, some schools are available for children hoping to make more of themselves. In Bulawayo, there are 46 known secondary schools as of 2010. Most schools are segregated by gender, but a few co-ed schools exist as well.
The first government-owned high school in Bulawayo, Milton High School is a school for boys only. The facilities resemble an estate house with red brick and a long, tree-framed road entrance. The students have the privilege of living and dining on campus. Milton High School is proud to call the late South African Prime Minister Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd a graduate.
Christian Brothers College (CBC) is the most prestigious secondary school for boys in the city of Bulawayo. It is a private, multiracial Roman Catholic school, although the denomination of the student does not matter for acceptance. An application and acceptance is required; CBC is an elite school and the tuition is steep as well. As a result, however, the school hires only the best teachers. The school has graduated award-winning authors, professional sports competitors, and even the Zimbabwean Minister of Education.
One of the best secondary school for girls in Bulawayo, or even in Zimbabwe, according to ServeAfrica.com, Girls College holds a mission of molding women for the modern world. This private school has a tennis court, swimming pool and multi-purpose sports field because the school believes that extracurricular activities are part of creating a well-rounded student.
One of the only co-ed schools in Bulawayo, Petra opened in 1993 and it has only made progress since. With a tiered lecture theater, two science labs, two basketball courts and other features, the students at this Catholic private school not only receive a well-rounded education, but they have plenty of extracurricular options as well.
