When summertime rolls around in Dallas the weather gets hot, the humidity rises and kids start looking for ways to spend their time while out of school. All throughout the Dallas area, various day and overnight camps allow kids the chance to experience a wide variety of activities from sports to the arts to education. Children who want to attend a summer camp but cannot afford the camp tuition can find several camps that offer scholarships.
With camp programs open to kids ages four to thirteen, Club Scientific Dallas runs several weekly sessions where kids can take part in full- or half-day sessions. The camp day consists of several science labs pertaining to that day or week’s theme, crafts, outdoor playtime, team building activities and snack and lunch breaks. Camp themes include dinosaurs, robots, oceanography, video game creation and crime scene investigation. To help cover the $250 weekly fee for full-day sessions and $199 weekly fee for half-day sessions, Club Scientific offers a limited number of scholarships. The scholarships are awarded based on financial need and awarded on a first come, first serve basis. Applications for scholarships can be submitted online through the Club Scientific website.
The Dallas Summer Musical Academy of Performing Arts has five locations around Dallas that offer year-round and summer classes. Classes offered change each semester; past summer sessions have included musical theater based on the television show “Glee” and a variety of musicals including "Cats" and "Phantom of the Opera." Scholarships are awarded to students with financial need and a household income that falls below the school’s low-income guidelines. Scholarships may award full or partial tuition, depending on the student’s situation. Applications can be found online at the Dallas Summer Musicals website.
Located outside of Dallas near Waco, the URJ Greene Family Camp is a Jewish summer camp with a variety of programs for kids in grades two through twelve. Sessions run throughout the summer and each session includes traditional camp activities along with educational activities promoting Jewish faith. "Camperships" based on need are available through a number of Jewish organizations and scholarship funds for campers who cannot afford the camp tuition. Total scholarship amounts are determined based on each family’s financial situation and ability to pay. Campers must first be registered with the camp before applying for a campership online through the camp website.
Offering overnight youth camps just outside of Dallas in Tyler, and day camps in several Dallas locations, Pine Cove Camps provides kids with several camping experiences. The day camps, known as Base Camps, are open to kids in grades one through five and are held at 11 locations across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Campers can choose to attend one session or several throughout the summer. To help cover the costs, campers can apply for a number of scholarships offered by partnering churches.
