Summer Camps in Chicago

Summertime camps are one of the most highly anticipated activities for students once the regular school year has ended. There are a myriad of types of camp themes that include nature and performing arts and campers have opportunities to stay overnight or go to camp activities in a day camp setting. For anyone in Chicago, there are a wide variety of summer camp options for kids ranging from pre-kindergarten ages to early teenagers.

  1. SPACE

    • The Southport Performing Arts Conservatory, otherwise known as SPACE, has summer arts camps available in music, dance and visual art. The two summer classes sessions run two weeks each for students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Each of the co-ed classes offered are taught in a non-competitive and nurturing environment. The SPACE camp programs offer half-day camps and studio performances. Students are also taught to make aesthetic judgments. One of the dance themed classes includes the Storybook of a Little Princess and Prince that teaches the fundamentals of ballet and tumbling while dressed in costumes. There is also a visual arts programs that allows students to create drawings, paintings and sculptures.

    John G. Shedd Aquarium

    • Shedd Aquarium has nature oriented summer camp programs for kids age five to fourteen. There are several Shedd Explorers and other camp opportunities available. In the Shedd Explorers Summer Camp, campers explore the life of a veterinarian, aquarist, animal trainer and research assistant as well as taking a canoe trip along the Chicago River for a look at the Great Lakes ecosystem. There is also a Shedd Explorers group that explores the waters of Lake Michigan on a sailboat. For the younger campers, the Summer Worlds Tour Camp includes trips to the Adler Planetarium and Field Museum.

    Francis W. Parker School

    • The summer programs at Parker are open to students entering pre-kindergarten programs to twelfth grade. The campus includes an outdoor playground, courtyard and soccer field. The all ages Chess Camp exposes campers to the finer aspects of the game; there are morning and evening classes for all levels of players. The Parker Summers Extreme camp is a full day program, campers play gym games, visit the beach and compete in various tournaments.
