Haunted Places to Visit in the Pine Barrens, New Jersey

Many people believe in the paranormal--monsters, UFOs and, in particular, ghosts. There are thousands of famous, supposedly haunted destinations throughout the United States. Several of those areas are located in and around the New Jersey Pine Barrens. This vast, largely abandoned, tree-covered area has a rich history and is home to more than a few tragedies, making it a perfect location for spirits and ghouls.

  1. Whitesbog

    • Whitesbog is a famous location among New Jersey locals familiar with the Pine Barrens. It was once a cranberry bog and blueberry farm started by Joseph J. Fenwick and Mary A. White and eventually owned by Elizabeth White and her family. The 3,000-acre area was once a bustling town (in the 1850s), but over time, it was abandoned. The area is known for several sightings of the legendary Jersey Devil, the demonic creature said to haunt the area. Since this is an abandoned town in New Jersey, there is no formal street address. However, schedule a visit by going to whitesbog.org.

    Kip's Castle

    • Kip's Castle is another supposedly haunted attraction located in Essex County near the Pine Barrens. The ornate castle is built on an 11-acre property on top of First Mountain and is named after Frederick Kip, the owner and builder. It is now owned and managed by the Essex County Parks Department. The site has been said to have several ghosts both inside of the castle and on the grounds.

    Lambert Castle

    • Lambert Castle is a historic landmark/haunted area located in Paterson, N.J. Like Kip's Castle, it is an elaborately constructed castle that is now a tourist destination. In fact, Lambert Castle is a museum housing some of the history of New Jersey. It also allegedly houses several spirits of workers and others who were once associated with the castle.

    Pyramid Mountain

    • This location was once inhabited by the Lenape Indian tribe. It has several strange rock formations said to have been constructed by the Indians. Today, it is a popular hiking area, with several trails and mixed terrain. Some say that the spirits of the ancient Indians still haunt the area.
