Wisconsin's North Woods region takes pride in extending a warm welcome to snowmobilers. Sawyer County offers several groomed trails and snowmobile clubs that provide maps and trail reports. You'll need to register your machine with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which can be done on line. Snowmobile rentals are abundant, as are snowmobile-friendly lodging and dining options.
The Tuscobia State Trail is 74 miles of abandoned railroad bed that stretches through four counties. It is maintained by the nonprofit Friends of Tuscobia Trail organization. When conditions allow, snowmobiles are welcome along the trail's entire length, from Rice Lake in Barron County to Park Falls in Price County.
The Sawyer County Forest consists of 114,000 acres of public land in seven blocks around the county, managed by the county's forestry department for timber, large and small game, and recreational use. Trails throughout the forest are open to snowmobilers in season.
Trail 31 is one of several trails near Stone Lake. Originating in the town of Hayward, Trail 31 travels south across Lac Court Oreilles and along Sand Lake, offering beautiful views and ice fishing possibilities on its way to meeting the Tuscobia State Trail near Birchwood.
