The Ackley Wildlife Area was once used for forestry and failed attempts at farming. It is now set-aside to protect the habitat of the Prairie (Sharp tailed) grouse. The area is home to a mix of grasslands, aspen and northern hardwood stands, and is a popular destination for hunting, hiking, berry picking, camping and biking. The area includes a snowmobile trail, which is open to ATVs. Like on other state snowmobile trails, ATVs cannot be used if the air temperature is 28 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, or if the vehicle is equipped with chains and studded tires.
Located in northwest Wisconsin, the Augustyn Springs Trail is a dedicated ATV trail operated by Langlade county from May to December. The 16.2-mile trail travels through northern hardwood forests and features moderately difficult terrain. Riders can expect to ride along a rolling to very hilly route. The trailhead for the Augustyn Spring Trail is located on highway A near Ainsworth, Wisconsin.
According to the Wisconsin ATV Association, Parrish Highlands is one of the best trail systems in the state because of its diverse terrain and stunning natural setting. The 55-mile trail connects with part of the Langlade county forest, where riding is also permitted on forest roads and trails (except cross-country skiing trails). The scenic trail features tall hardwoods, streams, wildlife and rolling hills. Riders can enter the trail system on County Road T, west of Summit Lake. From there, ATV operators can ride on trail loops to the west or travel north to access the eastern trails.
