New York Sightseeing Guide

Most visitors know the obvious New York tourist spots like Times Square and the Empire State Building. To really get a taste of New York, add a few lesser known attractions and splurge on hotels and restaurants to experience the best of Manhattan.

  1. What to See

    • The view from the Staten Island Ferry is a great New York experience.
      1. Walk through the West Village. Arguably Manhattan's prettiest neighborhood, the core of the West Village is Bleecker Street. Lined with upscale boutiques and home to the famous Magnolia Bakery, pioneer of the cupcake trend, this leafy area is a must-see for in-the-know travelers.

      2. Take the Staten Island Ferry. It's fun, it's free and it has one of the best views in New York City, slowly ebbing away from Manhattan's skyline and passing by the Statue of Liberty.

      3. Visit the New Museum. One of the Lower East Side's most interesting attractions, the rectangular, box-like structure of the New Museum is the first clue that this is not your grandmother's museum. Showcasing avant-garde artwork exhibits, the museum also has a great roof terrace with view and a great store where visitors can buy hip souvenirs.

    Where to Eat

    • Dining in New York is an experience unto itself.
      1. Gotham Bar and Grill. One of New York's staple restaurants, the busy buzzing atmosphere complements the upscale American cuisine like Grilled New York Prime Steak and White Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwiches for dessert.

      2. Le Bernardin. For at least a decade, Le Bernardin has topped New York's best lists and holds a coveted 3-stars from Michelin. Dishes like Caviar-Wagyu Surf-n-Turf or Figs with Bacon Ice Cream for dessert keep gourmets coming back.

      3. Tartine. On the casual end of fine New York restaurants, Tartine serves charming, tasty French cuisine. The menu is affordable and the restaurant's B.Y.O.B. policy means you won't leave lamenting the tab.

    Where to Stay

      1. The Library Hotel. This cozy luxury boutique hotel is only steps from the New York Public Library, a must-see tourist attraction for visitors. Included in the stay are a sumptuous breakfast buffet, happy hour appetizers and drinks and passes to a local sports club.

      2. Hotel Elysee. Built in the 1920s, Hotel Elysee maintains an old-world feel. Convenient to Central Park, the hotel is also close to Upper East Side museums, Fifth Avenue shopping and more.

      3. The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park. The quintessential luxury New York hotel is located on Central Park, has heavenly melt-in-the-pillows beds, a spa and is not a bad spot for celebrity-sightings.
