Things to Do in Ohio in October

Kids and adults alike may enjoy the plentiful opportunities of enjoyable things to do in Ohio in the fall. The month of October, in particular, hosts a variety of activities centered on autumn and Halloween themes. Hot dogs, car shows and festivals are available throughout the state during the month of October. Haunted houses, parades and craft shows are also a part Cleveland's offerings of entertaining outdoor fun.

  1. Ohio Swiss Festival

    • This Ohio Swiss Festival occurs for the first two days of October in 2010. Admission is free, but parking costs $5. Eat Swiss food, listen to music and watch the Grand Parade. Swiss wrestling and stone throwing are some of the activities offered. The crowning of the Ohio Swiss Queen is another enjoyable event held on Friday evening of the festival. The 2010 festival starts at noon on Friday, October 1 and continues until 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 2.

    Haunted Hills at Magic Waters Theatre

    • Throughout the month of October, Magic Waters Theatre provides Halloween fun for the family. Haunted Hills, used for live outdoor entertainment functions, takes visitors down a dark trail lit by torches. Magic and entertainment is provided by Boonie the Magician. As of October 2010, admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children. Parking is free. The Haunted Hills tour is only open on weekend evenings.

    Annual Pumpkin Run Nationals Car Show

    • As of 2010, the 35th annual car show in Owensville, Ohio, will be held in October. Vehicles made in 1970 or older are eligible for entering and participating in this show. Around 3,000 cars are on display every year and a grand prize is awarded to the winner of the best looking vehicle. Admission is $5 and parking is free. The proceeds from the show are donated to local charities.The Pumpkin Run is held on the first weekend of October and begins at 6:30 a.m. on the first day. Craft vendors, live music, food and Hot Wheel drag races are available.

    Train of Terror and Haunted Engine House

    • For an authentic haunted night, adults and teens can participate in the Train of Terror and Haunted Engine House. Visitors can ride a steam engine train and take a walk through a dark, haunted engine house. As of October 2010, admission is $7 for adults and teens. This event runs throughout the month of October, on Friday and Saturday evenings only. Proceeds benefit the Railroad Preservation Company. Bring a jacket or sweater as this event is held outdoors.
