A weekend getaway is the solution to a long work week. Los Angeles is perfectly situated between mountains and the Pacific Ocean. A couple days is all you need to explore all the diverse ecologies and attractions surrounding this area of Southern California to recharge for Monday morning.
Most Angelenos never make it to the beach though they live so close. A weekend at Malibu's Carbon Beach, or "Billionaire's Beach," would allow you to really relax. Stay on the beach at David Geffen's chic Malibu Beach Inn. Rent a surf board or a kayak. Shop like a local at the Country Mart at Cross Creek. Then dance underneath the stars at Moonshadows Lounge.
Summer and Winter is perfect in Big Bear. Rent a cabin on the lake, and breathe in the natural beauty. Boating and fishing on the lake is available in the warm months, and all your snow sports are here when the temperature drops.
The four and half hour drive from Los Angeles to Sin City is a breeze along the 15. You don't need to gamble to have fun here. This is the dining and shopping capital of the world. There is even a Chinatown here with many great Asian restaurants. If you need time away from the strip, take a side trip to Hoover Dam or go hiking at beautiful Red Rock Canyon. Or if you want more desert take a side trip to Joshua Tree National Park.
Ditch the car, and take Amtrak's Surfliner train South to San Diego. This fabulous city boasts numerous family attractions such as Sea World, La Jolla, Legoland, and of course the San Diego zoo. The Gaslamp District is the place for restaurants and clubs.
Take the "Sideways" wine tour in Santa Barbara County. Stay in "Danish Town," Solvang, at the Days Inn Windmill like the buddies in the movie. For non-drinkers visit the miniature horse farm, hike through the state parks, or visit the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum. Fine dining and gourmet eateries are located throughout the area.
