Tourists may think that December is a bad month to visit San Diego. However, locals know this is not true. With the average temperature in December a comfortable 65 degrees Fahrenheit, there is more to do in December besides heading to the beach or visiting the world famous San Diego Zoo. The city offers many enjoyable activities that are only available in December.
For two Sundays in December, private boats decorate their sails with strings of lights and parade around the San Diego Bay. Festivities begin with fireworks and then the light parade starts. The parade lasts for about 1 1/2 hours and admission is free.
Imagine ice skating with a view of the Pacific Ocean. At the Hotel Del Coronado, you can do just that. The skating takes place on the oceanfront Windsor Lawn, which the hotel transforms into an ice rink with daily skating sessions. A portion of the skating proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego.
Every December the Del Mar Fairgrounds hosts its Holiday of Lights show. This drive-through show includes more than 400 family-oriented displays. You view the lighted creations from your car as you follow a 1 1/2-mile route while listening to holiday music on your car radio.
The Poinsettia Bowl and the Holiday Bowl take place at Qualcomm Stadium every December. The Poinsettia Bowl matches a team from the Mountain West Conference against the bowl-eligible Naval Academy Midshipmen. The Holiday Bowl is a game between the Pacific 10 Conference and the Big 12 Conference. The mild San Diego weather makes this an enjoyable holiday tradition for sports fans.
