Recreational Activities in Glamis, California

Glamis, is Southern California, is known for the Imperial Sand Dunes (also called the Glamis Dunes), the largest in the state. While the dunes themselves can be beautiful and are host to a variety of desert plants, it is an excellent location for Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) use. For off-roading, it's a popular destination year round.

  1. Permits

    • All visitors to the Imperial Sand Dunes are required to pay a fee for entry. The fee can be paid in advance for a reduced rate or bought at the Imperial Sand Dunes that day. Both season (valid for one year) and weekly permits are available.

    Vehicles

    • If you don't have your own off-highway vehicle, there are plenty of places nearby where you can rent an OHV or all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

Ocotillo Rentals and Tours offers delivery service to Glamis if you don't want to get a trailer to transport your rental the rest of the way. They offer a selection of dirt bikes, buggies, and ATVs to rent. While there are many other ATV rental places in Southern California, this is one of few that will deliver.

    What to Bring

    • There are few restaurants or even gas stations around Glamis, so make sure you bring food and water with you. Though the temperature drops at night, days can be quite hot, so dress accordingly.

A GPS device is also a necessity when off-roading since the dunes are 40 miles long and easy to get turned around in.
