Elk Hunting Preserve in Nebraska

Nebraska is well-known for its big-game hunting opportunities, especially for elk, bighorn sheep and deer. Many of the elk hunting preserves in Nebraska are on private land. Some elk and big-game hunting preserves, though, are on state or federal land.

  1. Private Preserves

    • According to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the majority of elk hunted for sport in Nebraska are hunted on private land. Kreycik Riverview Elk Ranch and Dismal River Outfitters are examples of private landowners in Nebraska that maintain elk hunting preserves.

    State Wildlife Management Areas

    • During the elk season, hunting is allowed on Nebraska's state wildlife management areas. These areas are public preserves for recreational and nature activities. Tree stands are not allowed in Nebraska's wildlife management areas. In 2010, the elk bull hunting season is from September 25 to October 24.

    Fort Pierre National Grassland

    • The Fort Pierre National Grassland in South Dakota and Nebraska is part of the Nebraska National Forest, and is preserve for big-game hunting. This is a major federal preserve for hunters. The grassland is open for recreation year-round, but hunters must follow state regulations and seasons.
