Only one ski resort is located within Galena, Illinois, city limits at Chestnut Mountain Resort. However, another large ski resort, Sundown Mountain, is only fifteen and a half miles from Galena across the Mississippi River in Dubuque, Iowa. Other ski parks are available for skiers willing to travel a couple of hours into Wisconsin.
Chestnut Mountain is located just outside of Galena, Illinois, and has nineteen maintained ski trails with a 475-foot vertical drop, half mile runs, nine ski lifts and a seven-acre terrain park. Tickets range from $30 to $45 depending on the time and day you visit and equipment rental ranges from $25 to $30. Discounts are given for two day passes and equipment rental, military and groups. Ski lessons are available. The resort has a 100-room lodge located atop the mountain close to the top of the ski slopes and its summertime alpine slide. The lodge has two restaurants, entertainment, a game room, indoor pool, sauna, whirlpool and free internet service. Summer visitors can also enjoy nearby river cruises, miniature golf, and bike rentals; other attractions include nearby historical sites, restaurants and specialty shops.

Sundown Mountain boasts its 100 instructors, 20 trails, six lifts, a 475-foot vertical drop and two terrain parks on its website. It has 21 runs, four chair lifts and two conveyor carpets. One of its terrain parks offers rails, boxes, jumps and a half pipe on seven acres; the other is a mini terrain park for beginners. Sundown also has a free ski corral, free timed racing, children's programs and weekend entertainment. Lift tickets range between $10 and $39 depending on the time, day, portion of season and skill level; equipment rental is between $22 and $31. The resort also offers daily specials and group discounts.

Tyrol Basin is located approximately 70 miles from Galena in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, about an hour and a half drive. The area's website states it is designed and caters to families, freestylers and racers. It also has a gift shop, rents equipment and has a bar.

Mt. LaCrosse, 134 miles from Galena, has eighteen ski slopes and trails service by three double chair lifts and one rope tow. It boasts a 516-foot vertical drop, 5,300 foot run and terrain park. It offers lessons, group rates, season passes, racing, events, activities and a kid's zone. The website contains links for nearby hotels for lodging. The facility has a chalet on site which contains food, a ski shop, equipment rental and repair as well as a bar. It is located off of Highway 14/61; signs along the highway direct traffic to Mt. LaCrosse.
