The city of Boston is between the Boston Harbor and Charles River. Getting out onto either body of water is a great way to observe and learn more about the city. Boston's two "Duck Boat" tour companies conduct tours with World War II-era amphibious vehicles that tour the city streets and plunge into the river and harbor for further exploration. A Boston walking tour also celebrates the city's connection with the famous children's book "Make Way For Ducklings."
Boston Duck Tours was the first tour company in the city to transport passengers in World War II-era amphibious vehicles. The company's fleet of 21 Duck Boats leads passengers on guided tours of the entire city from March to December of each year. Tours depart from two separate locations. An 80-minute tour departs from the Prudential Center and an abbreviated 55-minute tour departs from the New England Aquarium. Both tours are inclusive of "splash down" into the Charles River.

The Historic Neighborhoods Foundation conducts weekend walking tours tracing the route taken by the ducks in the famous 1941 children's book "May Way for Ducklings" by Robert McCloskey. The tour starts at the Charles River and spans the few blocks to the Boston Public Garden. The tour passes the miniature bronze sculpture of the ducks erected in the park in 1987.
