Kansas City is located in the middle of the country along the banks of the Missouri River. Kansas City has been a frequent stop for travelers since Lewis and Clark first explored the area in 1804.     • Arthur Bryant's first opened its doors in the early 1920s and has been serving Kansas City residents, visitors and celebrities ever since. The simple dining room is packed with tables practically one on top of the other; photos of famous diners like President Jimmy Carter and director Steven Spielberg adorn the walls. Get a burnt ends sandwich or a combo sandwich with your choice of two meats. You can also order a whole slab of pork ribs and slather it with the Original Sauce. For the more adventurous, try the Sweet Heat Sauce. Sides include fries, potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, pickles and bread. Catering for special events is available.     Jack Stack Barbecue Freight House

    • The Jack Stack Barbecue restaurant is housed in a converted historic Freight house complete with a full bar, 25-foot ceilings, a fireplace lounge and outdoor seating. Start off with an appetizer of burnt ends (beef, ham or pork seared until tender and cut into bite-sized chunks). All of the sandwiches come with French fries. Try the Southern Jack (pulled pork smothered in spicy sauce and served on a French roll). All the meats, including the fish, are grilled over hickory. Pair any entrée with a side of cheesy corn bread or the loaded baked potato. Finish everything off with one of the restaurant's homemade desserts, like the vanilla rum bread pudding or Mom's carrot cake. All the sauces and rubs are available for purchase online.

    Gates & Sons Bar-B-Q

    • Established in 1946, Gates & Sons Bar-B-Q is family-owned and operated. The Gates brand sauces are available online through the site as well as in grocery stores across the nation. There are six locations across Missouri and Kansas. You can order chicken, sausage or mutton at the cafeteria-style line, as well as sandwiches and a number sides like onion rings or cole slaw. Catering is available. Gates & Sons also provides recipes on its website for some of its dishes.
