Home to multiple hiking trails and a host of legendary natural wonders, Yosemite Valley remains the most popular region of Yosemite National Park. Although its history dates back millions of years, today the valley caters to the needs of modern tourists.
Situated in the midst of Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Valley stretches for only seven miles (and sits only one mile wide) yet it draws 95 percent of the park's tourists.
Yosemite Valley houses some of the world's most famous natural landmarks, including the massive rock formations of Half Dome and El Capitan, not to mention Yosemite Falls, a nearly 2,500 foot waterfall.
The rock formations in the valley date back at least 100 million years, while water erosion carved out the valley approximately 70 million years ago. Native Americans lived in the region for thousands of years, the first non-indigenous people entered the valley in 1851.
Yosemite Valley features plush lodging in the form of the famed first-class hotel, The Ahwahnee. Four camp sites sit within the actual valley as well, though early reservations (up to five months in advance) are highly suggested.
Yosemite National Park features four entrances, all of which convene in the valley. In order to cut back on traffic and pollution, a bus shuttles visitors throughout Yosemite Valley.
With summer crowds not yet in full force and comfortable weather conditions in play, late May and early June remain the best time to visit Yosemite Valley.
