Located on Isla Verda, the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan (SJU), is Puerto Rico's largest airport. Travelers from O'Hare have many airlines to choose from that serve San Juan. All the major airlines including American, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, United and US Airways offer flights to San Juan. However, only American, United and USAir offer nonstop flights, as of March 2011.
Located on the northwestern part of the island, Aguadilla is known for its beaches and surfing. The Rafael Hernandez International Airport, with the airport code BQN, is the next largest airport on the island. Continental, JetBlue and Spirit Airlines fly to Aguadilla but none offer nonstop flights. The airlines provide connecting flights through Newark, JFK or Ft. Lauderdale.
Ponce is second largest to San Juan and located in the south central part of the island. Mercedita International Airport, with the airport code PSE, serves the area. Continental and JetBlue fly to Ponce; however, like flights to Aguadilla, there are no nonstop flights. JetBlue flights connect at JFK airport and Continental flights connect in Houston or Newark.
The fourth largest airport is Antonio Rivera Rodriguez Airport, with the airport code VQS, in Vieques. Famous for its phosphorescent bay, Vieques is a 21-mile island that lies between Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. Continental flies to Vieques with two stops: one in Houston and the other in San Juan. Because Vieques is a small island, you can only find flights on turbo prop aircraft from San Juan to the island.
