How to Fly to Canada From Ireland

Canada and Ireland may share strong ancestral ties, friendly political relations and a youth working holiday program, but with few direct flights, travel between the two countries can prove complicated. By undertaking a little research, though, you'll find you can make the 3,000-mile journey by using alternate routes.

Start your search with Canada's largest airline, Air Canada, and Montreal-based Air Transat. Both offer non-stop flights between Dublin and Toronto, with more availability during summer months.

If your travel dates don't match those with direct flights, plan to arrive first to London. You can reach the English capital's two major airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, from Dublin, Belfast, Shannon and Cook. British Airways and Aer Lingus as well as low-cost companies Easy Jet and Ryan Air cover the routes.

Pick up a connecting flight from London to your Canadian destination. As the busiest airport in the world, Heathrow gives you many options for arriving to the North American country's largest cities, including Halifax, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver. If you'll land at Gatwick and have your second flight from Heathrow, or the opposite, budget at least three hours in between. A bus connects the two airports, but the estimated travel time is an hour and a half.

Fly from Ireland to the United States if you wish to have the longer part of your trip first. Aer Lingus, in partnership with popular U.S. company JetBlue, flies from Shannon to Boston and New York, while trips from Dublin reach those cities as well as Chicago. Though the major U.S. low-cost airlines don't travel to Canada, other reputable companies like American Airlines, Air Canada and Delta will get you there on one of their many daily flights.
