How to Obtain a Passport From Ireland

Passports are documents used to travel overseas and prove your identification and citizenship in other countries. For Irish citizens and people born in Ireland wanting to travel internationally and within the European Union, a passport from Ireland is required. Although application forms can only be obtained from several offices and centers in Ireland, the application process can be done either by mail or in person.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out the Ireland passport application form. Application forms can be obtained from many Ireland post offices, Citizen Advice Centers, Garda Stations in Ireland and Passport Offices in Cork and Dublin.

    • 2

Obtain two passport photos that meet passport photo guidelines. The photographs must be sized between 35 x 45 mm and 38 x 50 mm. The photo must be in black and white and must have been taken within the last six months. Photo studios that offer passport photo services are equipped to handle these guidelines.

    • 3

Take your application and one passport photo to the "Garda Síochána" to be signed. If you are applying in Ireland, you must have the signature section of the application and the back of the passport photo signed by an Irish signatory. If you are applying overseas, the application form and photo must be signed by the signatory office specified on your application form.

    • 4

Obtain a certified copy of your Ireland birth certificate. If you have undergone a name change, include a proof of name change document along with your application. If you reside outside of Ireland, you can obtain your proof of name change from your nearest Ireland Embassy or consulate. If you are living in Ireland, obtain the name change documents from your nearest Garda station.

    • 5

Pay the Ireland passport application fee. A list of fees can be found on the Department of Foreign Affairs website (see Resources).

    • 6

Send your application form, necessary documents and passport photos by mail to:

      The Passport Office

      P.O. Box 9718

      Co. Dublin

You can also apply in person at a Cork or Dublin Passport Office. You should expect to receive your new Ireland passport in four to six weeks.
