Precious Metal P-51 Specs

The P-51 Mustang, nicknamed "Precious Metal," is an American-made plane that gained notoriety during the second World War when it provided escort services to long range bombers. The bombing campaigns it was involved in helped choke the support lines of the enemy and put an end to the enemy's production of war machinery. As of 2009, there were about 280 P-51 Mustangs still in existence.
  1. Dimensions and Weight

    • There were six models of the Precious Metal P-51 made. The XP-51 has an empty weight of 8400 lbs, a length of 32.25 feet, a height of 12.2 feet, and a wing span of 37.04 feet. The P-51A has the same dimensions as the XP-51, but its empty weight is 6433 lbs. The P-51B/C-1, the P-51B/C and the P-51D/K have the same length and wing spans as the previous two models, but their heights are 13.67 feet. The empty weight of the P-51B/C-1 is 6840 lbs, while the empty weights of the P-51B/C and the P-51D/K are 6985 lbs and 7635 lbs. The P-51H has a length of 33.33 feet, a height of 13.67 feet, a wing span of 37.04 feet, and an empty weight of 7040 lbs.

    Power Plant

    • The XP-51 and P-51A Precious Metal planes use Allison power plants, while the other four models use Rolls-Royce Packard power plants. The XP-51 and P-51A engines have displacements of 1710 cubic inches. The other four models have displacements of 1649 cubic inches. The normal horsepower rating of the P-51B/C and the P-51D/K is 1490, while the horsepower ratings of the XP-51, P-51A, P-51B/C-1, and P-51H are 1150, 1200, 1380 and 1380, respectively. The XP-51 and P-51A do not have war emergency horsepower (WEH), but the other models do. The P-51B/C-1 has a WEH of 1620, the P-51B/C and the P-51D/K have a WEH of 1720, and the P-51H has a WEH of 2270.

    Performance

    • The XP-51, P-51A, P-51B/C-1, P-51B/C, P-51D/K and P-51H have maximum speeds of 382 mph at 13,000 feet, 390 mph at 20,000 feet, 430 mph at 25,000 feet, 439 mph at 25,000 feet, 437 mph at 25,000 feet, and 487 mph at 25,000 feet, respectively. The service ceilings of the XP-51, P-51A, P-51B/C-1, P-51B/C, P-51D/K, and P-51H are 30,800 feet, 31,350 feet, 41,500 feet, 41,900 feet, 41,900 feet, and 41,600 feet, respectively. The fuel capacity of the P-51A and P-51B/C-1 is 180 gallons, while the fuel capacity for the P-51B/C and P-51D/K is 269 gallons. The P-51H has a fuel capacity of 255 gallons, and the XP-51 can fit 170 gallons of fuel in its tank.
