How to Make Your Flight More Comfortable

Given the choice, few of us would choose to make a cross-country trip jammed into a narrow seat that offers little in the way of basic comfort. The extra touches that airlines used to offer-snacks, drinks, even full meals-are no longer complimentary and often aren’t worth what they now cost. You can’t do anything about flight delays or surly fellow passengers, but there are steps you can take to make your flight more comfortable.

Things You'll Need

  • File folder
  • wipes
  • snacks
  • drinks
  • inflatable pillow
  • extra clothes

Instructions

  1. Make Your Flight More Comfortable

    • 1

Start a trip folder and put airline, hotel and car rental reservations in it. Should you encounter a problem with any of these services, you will be able to quickly locate your copy of your reservation. Also include a list of airline telephone numbers. If you miss a connection or are faced with a weather delay, it may be quicker to rearrange your flights by calling the airline rather than waiting in a long line with everyone else from your flight.

    • 2

Bring clothes to fit the situation. In the winter, dress in layers and take off or put on a layer as needed. During the summer, you may be tempted to board the airplane dressed in shorts and a tank top. Although it may be 90 degrees outside, you might feel like you’ve stepped inside a freezer when you board the plane. Wear the lightest pair of pants you own. Bring a lightweight long-sleeved shirt you can put on if you get cold. If you are wearing sandals, bring a pair of socks to put on during the flight. If you are worried about being too hot when you get to your destination, bring a change of warm weather clothes in your carry on bag and change when you get off the plane.

    • 3

Buy an inflatable pillow rather than use one on the airplane. There is no way to know just how clean the airline pillows are and that question won’t even cross your mind when you have your own pillow to use.

    • 4

Bring several wipes in a plastic bag. They are very useful if you spill something on yourself or your hands just don’t feel clean after visiting the restroom.

    • 5

Take motion sickness medication if flying makes you feel ill. There are non-drowsy brands available that will not make you feel lethargic.

    • 6

Don’t wear your contacts. The dry air in the cabin can dry out your eyes, leading to contact lens irritation.

    • 7

Bring your own snacks and drinks, even if the airline still provides them. You never know when you’ll be delayed, and it’s a good idea to have your own supply of food. Non-messy snacks are best, and your fellow passengers will thank you if you skip stinky foods.
