Wildlife of the River Tiber: From Eels to Herons in Rome's Ancient Waterway
A Surprisingly Rich Urban River
The Tiber (Tevere) flows 405 km through Rome to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Despite centuries of channelization, pollution, and flood control, it supports remarkable biodiversity—especially in its lower reaches and tributaries.
Fish (13+ Species Recorded)
- Diadromous (sea–freshwater migrants): European eel (critically endangered), sea bass, gilthead sea bream, thinlip mullet.
- Freshwater residents: Chub, barbel, nase, bleak, tench, carp, brown/rainbow trout (stocked), pike, wels catfish (invasive, to 2 m).
- Conservation note: Eel recovery plans; barbel and chub as indicator species.
Mammals
- Eurasian beaver – recolonizing (natural + reintroductions); ecosystem engineers.
- Eurasian otter – expanding from Apennines; flagship for water quality.
- Water vole, muskrat (invasive), coypu (invasive) – burrow in banks.
Birds (Riparian & Wetland Specialists)
- Waterfowl: Mallard, tufted duck, coot, moorhen.
- Piscivores: Grey heron, great cormorant, kingfisher, great crested grebe.
- Gulls/terns: Yellow-legged gull, black-headed gull, common tern (breeding on artificial rafts).
Invertebrates – Bioindicators
- Odonata: Dragonflies (emperor, banded demoiselle), damselflies.
- Ephemeroptera/Trichoptera: Mayflies, caddisflies—clean-water indicators.
- Mollusks: Freshwater mussels (Unionidae), invasive Corbicula.
Restoration Momentum
- Tiber River Contract (Contratto di Fiume) – multi-stakeholder governance.
- Wastewater treatment upgrades (Roma Sud, 2023) – 100% secondary treatment target.
- Riparian rewilding – native vegetation, floodplain reconnection.
- Fish passes at weirs – restoring longitudinal connectivity.
Experience It
Cycle the Tiber cycle path (pista ciclabile) from Castel Giubileo to Ostia Antica. Join Legambiente birding walks. Watch herons hunt at Tiber Island (Isola Tiberina) at dusk.
